On this episode of Techfoolery, Ashley and Mike talk about all the Google I/O madness, Facebook’s secret smear campaign against Google, and why Microsoft may have bought Skype.
Ashley demos Google Music and gives her review of the Droid Incredible 2, and they go another round in the Technodome. We learn the winners of Round 2 (Tim Schafer v Ashley and Steve Ballmer v Steve Wozniak) and kick off the voting for Round 3. Gaga or Miyamoto? Mike or Zuckerberg? It’s up to you!
There’s also another Ask Steve, and a new induction into the Museum of Mobile Art.

Hey everyone, Mike here. I wanted to do a little hands-on demo of a cool new music/timing game for the iPad called Pulse: Volume 1. It’s from Philadelphia-based Cipher Prime, previously responsible for the popular Auditorium and Fractal for Windows and Mac OSX. The game is $4.99 on the App Store and comes with eight songs to play with. Check it out.
TECHNODOME VOTING [ROUND 2]
PlayStation Network Hacked, PSN User Info Compromised
- Unauthorized person(s) hacked into PSN this past week!
All of PlayStation Network’s 77 million users affected
Totally unencrypted passwords, but *supposedly* your CC info was encrypted…
Indefinite return, Sony hopes to have some services back in a week.
Sony sucks. Lawsuits have already begun!
Amazon EC2 Outage Causes Huge Problems
- EC2 outage of one of their major data centers
Network glitch during an upgrade that cause storage volumes to constantly make backups, clogging the servers and causing them to hit capacity, causing lots of problems for some pretty major websites.
Sites like Reddit, Quora, Hootsuite, and Foursquare were among the services affected (pretty big sites)!
Worst outage in cloud computing history!
Speaks to the risks of the cloud…do you think it’s safe?
Official Apple Location Tracking Q&A/Information
- Everyone made a huge deal about Apple’s location tracking protocols this week.
It’s actually just a database file stored locally on your phone that keeps track of which cell phone towers and wifi networks you connect to, NOT a GPS tracking, privacy killing monster people are making it out to be.
Steve Jobs was even asked to answer to Congress to explain how Apple’s location services work…
Oh yeah, and fearmongering is stupid!
White iPhone Finally on Sale!
- It’s finally here; the white iPhone 4!
It’s selling out in Asia; but is it because of resellers or actual customers?
Timing? Meh. Who didn’t already buy one if they wanted one?
Sales supposedly lackluster… but we’ll see how it does in the future.
Wii 2 at E3
- Controllers are freaky looking if the descriptions are accurate; what do you think?
The console unveiling (and news that it will be playable) is confirmed for this year’s E3… yay!
Release date: 2012
Nintendo now releasing one game a month for Wii, but we don’t really know why.
Sony Unveils S1 and S2 Android Tablets, Might Be Certifiably Insane
- Sony showed off its S1 and S2 tablets; S1 is a slate, and the S2 is a clamshell dual screen tablet that looks completely boneheaded.
Both use dual core processors, and both are PlayStation certified, meaning they get access to PS Suite.
S1: Tegra 2, 9.4” screen, weird folded magazine design
S2: Tegra 2, Clamshell, 5.5” double screens
Officially ridiculous on all counts. Stop it, Sony.
TECHNODOME [ROUND 1 RESULTS, ROUND 2 OPEN]
Terrible news! We have a disturbing development in the Technodome. Reggie Fils-Amie has been kidnapped by Space Pirates! And we had no choice but to ask Samus Aran to get out of Earth and find Reggie and kill those damn dirty space pirates. Hopefully, she’ll bring him back alive, but until then, we’re down two combatants and had to substitute one person on each side.
LADY GAGA — Polaroid Creative Director (taking up the Pop Culture vacancy); and
MARK ZUCKERBERG — Facebook Founder (filling in on Tech Titans)
They’ll both be in the third round going up against Miyamoto and Mike, respectively. Good luck, combatants!
Round 1 Winners — ANDY RUBIN AND MORGAN WEBB!
Sorry Steve and Steve. Maybe next year.
Round 2 Voting — ASHLEY ESQUEDA vs TIM SCHAFER, and STEVE BALLMER vs WOZ
Vote early! Vote often! Share on Twitter and with your friends elsewhere on the interwebs!
“So I heard that that you finally got those white iPhones in production! But would you please explain how it fits into your character to create something bright, since your you’re so evil?”
– Phoneicus Maximus
MUSEUM OF MOBILE ART
Josh Melling from the Big Island of Hawaii submitted a lovely photo of Octo-Coral, a soft coral native to the Hawaiian Islands. It’s in his reef tank, and he used his Samsung Galaxy S Captivate to take it!
Thanks for watching!
Yes, an exclusive on our own site. From ourselves. Because we’re awesome!
What do you guys think? Mike and I designed our own robots! Welcome your new robot overlords!
Vote for your favorites! Share with your friends! Show everyone who reigns supreme in the TECHNODOME!!
UPDATE: Voting is now closed. Hope your favorite wins!
